Product Description "Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get to work." Chuck Close
Inside an art gallery, it is easy to forget that the paintings there are the end products of a process involving not only creative inspiration, but also plenty of physical and logistical details. It is these "cruder," more mundane aspects of a painter's daily routine that motivated Brooklyn artist Joe Fig to embark almost ten years ago on a highly unorthodox, multilayered exploration of the working life of the professional artist. Determined to ground his research in the physical world, Fig began constructing a series of diorama-like miniature reproductions of the studios of modern art's most legendary painters, such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. A desire for firsthand references led Fig to approach contemporary artists for access to their studios. Armed with a camera and a self-made "Artist's Questionnaire," Fig began a journey through the workspaces of some of today's most exciting contemporary artists.
Inside the Painter's Studio collects twenty-four remarkable artist interviews, as well as exclusive visual documentation of their studios. Featured artists were asked a wide range of questions about their day-to-day creative life, covering everything from how they organize their studios to what painting tools they prefer. Artists open up about how they set a creative mood, how they choose titles, and even whether they sit or stand to contemplate their work. Also included are a selection of Fig's meticulously detailed miniatures. In this context Fig's diminutive sculptures reproducing minutiae of the studio, from paint-tube labels and paint splatters on the floor to the surface texture of canvases become part of a fascinating new form of portraiture as diorama. Inside the Painter's Studio offers a rare look into the self-made universe of the artist's studio. Inside the Painter's Studio features interviews with Gregory Amenoff, Ross Bleckner, Chuck Close, Will Cotton, Inka Essenhigh, Eric Fischl, Barnaby Furnas, April Gornik, Jane Hammond, Mary Heilmann, Bill Jensen, Ryan McGinness, Julie Mehretu, Malcolm Morley, Steve Mumford, Philip Pearlstein, Matthew Ritchie, Alexis Rockman, Dana Schutz, James Siena, Amy Sillman, Joan Snyder, Billy Sullivan, and Fred Tomaselli.

...From ArtsyFartsy News, July 2010 August 25, 2010 Robert Burridge Studio Here's a goof-ball book and I like it! Inside the Painter's Studio by Joe Fig was recommended to me by my dear painter friend Brenda Goerzen from San Diego. This book meticulously captures twenty-four remarkable, contemporary artists' interviews and photos of their studios. Curious, huh? Then get it - it's where art gets done. Oh, I forgot - did I tell you the author is also obsessive? Wait until you see the photos! They are miniature 3D reproductions of the artists' studios! For crying out loud!
Fun Look Inside Artists' Minds July 9, 2010 C. Huddleston 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I wasn't sure I was going to like this book, because it was set up with a kind of "20 Questions" format: every interviewee had the same questions asked. I thought some of the questions sounded silly (like "What is your motto?" But as I read each interview and got further into the book, I liked it more and more.
These are all successful East Coast-based artists with really nice studios, and Mr. Fig, the interviewer, focuses his attention on particular items in the studio like the tables that each artist uses, the way they have set up or planned their studio, and each artist's typical day. Instead of showing photos of artwork, the photos show the inside of each studio, with artwork in progress or hanging on the wall.
I ended up really liking the format of the same question for each artist, it was interesting to hear how each responded (or not) to the questions and by the end I got a clear idea of what it takes for these artists to make it in their world. I wasn't familiar with all of the artists, and I liked that I had to do more research on my own to find out about each artist's artwork. It made the book feel interactive.
A HUGE bonus in this book is Joe Fig's art which is at the beginning of each chapter. He created a diorama of each artist's studio and photographed it, and they really blew me away! In fact, I didn't realize they were dioramas for the first few chapters. By the end of the book I kept going back to look at the dioramas. They are really unique and superbly done.
Highly recommended!
A latter day Vasari February 8, 2010 Christopher A. Reiger (New York, NY) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Joe Fig's terrific "Inside the Painter's Studio" offers readers a collection of intimate and insightful interviews with contemporary painters, a rare glimpse inside each artist's creative process and studio practice. Fig's effort is something of a latter day "Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects," the 1550 book written by painter and architect Giorgio Vasari. "Inside the Painter's Studio" also features many reproductions of Fig's meticulously crafted sculpture replicas of the artists' studios; Fig is a talented painter and sculptor himself. The book is a valuable addition to any painter's reference library.
Great info, funky, enlightening...great to see what other artists doing. February 6, 2010 J. Bright (ottawa, ON,Canada) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Great info, funky, enlightening...great to see what other artists doing.
A great read...though some parts short on information...sure wish some of them could be longer.
Definitely something everyone is interested in. Helps with our normal curiousity of what artists do.
Any artist's library needs this January 18, 2010 Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
An art gallery is the end result of not just painting but physical displays and a painter's daily routine., Artist Joe Fig explores the working life of the professional artist in a presentation that collections over twenty artist interviews and visual documentation of their studios. It was originally intended to serve as research material but provides a powerful resource for painters who want to know how art is achieved, from coming up with titles to collaborative efforts. Any artist's library needs this.
