Thorough and accessible July 20, 2010 A. Carter The 2nd edition of "Digital Restoration" is everything it claims to be without being too technical or too advanced for beginners, and the author's tone is relatable and authoritative at the same time. Chapters include hardware (memory, storage, backup, scanners, printers) software (photoshop, photoshop elements, other plug-ins etc) how to actually get photos into the computer, and then the various restoration techniques (restoring tone, restoring color, making masks, damage control, enhancements, etc). There are lots of color photographs of before/after examples as well as color photos of program menus that help guide you through the actual computer navigation of restoration. Only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is because, as all technological guides, its information is pretty temporal and will be in need of a 3rd updated edition relatively soon.
Update is great! June 27, 2010 Ollie I have the updated version, and find that the step by step instructions are perfect for someone trying to learn how to restore photographs, but doesn't know where to start. All you need is a scanner or a digital copy of your old photograph and this book.
Incredibly thorough - an amazing guide to restoring photos and other digital images June 21, 2010 fair_deal_guy (Prior Lake, MN USA) It's a Photoshop world...unless you are like me and prefer the elegant simplicity (and value) of Photoshop Elements. And it is extremely difficult to find in-depth how to books for Elements--the assumption by publishers is, I assume, that we're little more than a collection of scrapbookers and homeschoolers who don't need much from our software beyond light touch-ups.
Thankfully, the truly comprehensive "Digital Restoration from Start to Finish, Second Edition: How to repair old and damaged photographs" drills deep into the layers (no pun intended) and provides incredibly detailed, thoughtful advice and training on how to fix damaged photos.
If you've ever tried to digitally restore or enhance even one photo, you know how difficult this process can be--and how many unknowns lay in wait. This book is encyclopedic in scope, but avoids the lightweight, scattershot approach so many software "bibles" foist on unsuspecting readers. Instead, "Digital Restoration from Start to Finish, Second Edition: How to repair old and damaged photographs" leads you through a sensible, logical path from tragic damage to shiny perfection.
It's an priceless roadmap through a potentially harrowing maze of uncertainty. Highly recommended.
A Great Resource for Anyone Working with Old Photos June 16, 2010 Silmarwen (Huntington Beach, CA United States) My dad is a passionate genealogist who has recently started storing and restoring old photographs. We have boxes and albums full of old, faded photos to wade through. We don't want to lose these priceless images, but there is only so much that a program will automatically perform for you when you are trying to restore shadowy, blobby images that you aren't even sure what the details are! My dad is definitely not a book person, but I am! When I saw this book, I knew that it was just what we needed to help us out with the software that we have and let us know what we are capable of doing.
I found this book to be very approachable and easy to understand. This is definitely saying something as I do not understand a lot of the technical aspects involved with computers or computer programs as well as my dad does. We found everything that we were looking for in this book. There is a very helpful table of contents and a great index to help you find what you need as quickly and easily as possible. Also, this book is packed with photograph examples ranging from classic black-and-whites to full color restoration. I was not necessarily a fan of all the photo examples that the author chose (there are some nude photos inside the book), but I guess I understand why the examples were chosen. From the basics of eliminating red eye to cleaning dirt to restoring warm, realistic colors this book shows you all of the tips and tricks that you will need to know!
This book is too technical for a casual reader on the subject, but if you are working on a specific project and need some hints and or specific tricks and tips, this is a great book to buy for yourself or as a gift for a friend! And I am not just talking about genealogists or photo restorers, I am talking about those who scrapbook or craft with photos as a hobby. The author will help you select which computer program will best suit your needs, how to pull photos off of slides, how to store hard copies of photos and so much more! This is a great resource for anyone!
Packed with color screen shots and examples throughout June 16, 2010 Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) A recommended pick is the second updated edition of Ctein's DIGITAL RESTORATION FROM START TO FINISH, an in-depth guide to repairing and restoring old and damaged photos. From scanning faded prints to correcting uneven exposure and fixing color, this is packed with color screen shots and examples throughout.
